Big Cottonwood Canyon (Utah) backcountry ski day, April 2000

Myself and my friend Mike Dawson, who now lives in Utah, hiked up the Mill B Canyon in Big Cottonwood Canyon outside of Salt Lake City one fine April day. Sunny and warm. No snow around in the parking lot at about 6400 feet. At the head of Mill B Canyon are Sundial Peak and Dromedary Peak. Didn't hit snow til about 7800 feet; didn't skin up til about 8200 feet. There are a series of three lakes near the head of the valley at about 8800 feet.

We skinned up to about 9600 feet and skied down a nice, gently rolling open slope to the lakes; then cut through a notch, made our way through some rock bands and got a few more turns in down to about 8200 feet. The snow was about two inches of nice corn on top of some firmer stuff. At the end of our run we forced our way through willows to the creek which took some effort to cross. No mishaps though. Ski-boots are pretty waterproof!

Strapped our skis back on our packs and hiked out. A very fine day. Thanks Mike!
